These Depop Hacks Will Save You Time And Money

I don’t want to be one of those people who say they shopped on Depop before it was cool, but I started shopping on Depop before it was cool. Back in 2016, when I started using the app, vintage shopping was all the rage, but thrifting and second-hand shopping? It was sort of frowned upon. So, when people would ask me where I got my beloved orange skirt or my platform shoes from, I lied and said I bought them from a shop. I felt that my friends saw second-hand shopping as something odd — why spend money on something already used?

But for me, Depop was not only a place I could find unique items, but it was the only way at 17 that I could afford to shop sustainably. Once I became aware of how many tonnes of clothes were sent to landfills (300,000 tonnes in the UK alone) and how much pollution was created by creating a single garment, I decided to shop second hand.

Fast forward to 2022, Depop is home to 30 million users in over 150 countries, with 90% of its users being under 26 years old. As an environmentalist, it’s amazing to see how shopping second-hand can be cool and how when money is tight, it’s a fun way to make money. Bella McFadden was the first Depop seller to make £1 million on the app at the age of 24. With 140,000 daily listings, you might feel overwhelmed shopping on Depop. The unfair pricing of items has turned many users to use other second-hand apps such as Vinted. The gentrification of Depop is a severe problem. Yet, there are still many incredible Depop sellers and stores to buy from that sell stunning pieces for reasonable prices.

Here are some tips and tricks to shopping on Depop that will save you money and time:

Use social media

Social media is a great tool to find Depop sellers. Watching Depop hauls on YouTube, Instagram or TikTok can spark inspiration before you shop. Depop hauls are useful because they may also mention what sellers they bought from. Also, by following sellers on Instagram, you will be notified by their feed when new items are listed. You’ll have first dibs on new pieces.

Keywords are your best friend

Finding items on Depop is almost like playing a synonyms game — you have to come up with all the different ways to say the colour green that is humanly possible. The vital thing to remember is that not everyone calls a blouse a blouse. Some people might refer to it as a buttoned-up shirt — even if that is the wrong terminology. When searching for items, try to come up with different words to describe the item. For example, if I wanted a cropped cardigan, that was fitting, rather than searching “cropped cardigan”, I would search “boxy fit cardigan”. Knowing terminology for different types of necklines, skirts, etc., is key. Online shops are helpful for finding out the names of items and fabrics you like, such as “mock neck sweaters” or “boxy wool knit”. You can even copy and paste the title of items into the Depop search bar.

Make use of the Filter and the Sort by section

Remember, the good items go quick! If you want to get the most exclusive items for every search, remember to change the sort by section to “newly listed.” To save time, you’ll also want to filter in your size and budget. When you put your size in, make sure you choose the size below and one size over your standard size. Many brands fluctuate in representing sizes. You also don’t want to limit the items you see, that can easily fit various sizes.

Search for celebrities or fictional characters

One of my Depop goals is to find Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic green matching set look from Great Expectations. Sadly, I am still on the hunt. Nevertheless, searching for films, TV shows, fictional characters or even celebrities that inspire your style is another way to find unique items. For example, I search Phoebe Buffay (my favourite character from the TV show Friends) into the search bar to find rare pieces that reflect her style.

Look at other users’ likes

Another solution to finding items is clicking on profiles of people who wanted the same piece. Following your friends or finding people with a similar style to you is an amazing way to get exposed to a range of items that you never even knew existed!

Keep a lookout on the Depop Style Edit feature

The more you like items and use Depop, the more Depop will create the perfect style edit for you. The style edit is where Depop selects items it thinks you like. Hopefully, it becomes so accurate on your style that you won’t even have to search for items unless you’re looking for something more specific.

When in doubt, use Thriftscape

If you want to save even more time, Thriftscape is a website that scans all second-hand markets websites such as Vinted, Depop and eBay, so you don’t have to. It’s a great way to get items from Depop without shopping on there.
