What’s that? The smell of pumpkin spice latte? Autumn’s almost here, and with it some truly dreamy autumn haircut trends. So, what are we imagining we’ll be rocking alongside our ankle boots, roll necks and jeans? Heavy layers, lash-skimming fringes and curtain cuts are all on the menu for this season’s major hair trends. The question is, which autumn haircut will you choose? Layered cuts are easily the biggest hair trend this autumn, following on from the shags, mullets and wolf cuts that have dominated the past two years. The latest renditions? The Sachel, The Butterfly haircut and the continuation of ‘70s layers.

“The nice thing about autumn is that you can wear your hair down comfortably for the most part,” says celebrity hairstylist, Andrew Fitzsimons, who counts the Kardashians, JLo and Madonna as clients. Instead of scooping the whole lot up and out the way, contoured strands have a chance to shine. “This gives people an opportunity to play around with layers. I like taking on the challenge of classic loose hair with layers, by making the layers more dramatic, really shaping the face and highlighting the cheekbones and jaw,” he adds.

The butterfly cut

“I’ve been really into the butterfly haircut, which is a super layered, feather haircut that has long layers that fall just below the shoulder,” says Andrew. “The shorter layers are cut closer to the crown of your head which creates the illusion of having shorter hair strands. The layers resemble butterfly wings, and I think it is a really flattering and chic look.”

The Modern Rachel

“Draped layers are back too. Remember that super defined face framing style Jennifer Aniston wore in the ‘90s early ‘00s? Yes… they are back,” says celebrity hairstylist, Danielle Priano, whose clients include Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber and Vanessa Hudgens. The Rachel 2.0 is here to stay.

’70s waves

The ‘70s hair revival is also going nowhere. “I’ve been styling a few of my celebrity clients with ’70s inspired looks and I’m here for it. The billowing waves, Farrah Fawcett flicks and fluffy poofed waves and curls are all the rage for this coming season,” confirms Dom.

The Satchel

Like the sound of both the ‘70s and ’90s influences? International session stylist and Babyliss ambassador, Syd Hayes has dubbed the collision of the ‘70s shag with the ’90s Rachel, “The Sachel”. “It’s where the Shag meets The Rachel,” he explains. “If you’ve been growing out your shag this is the perfect moment to rock the modern Rachel. Make it modern by keeping the shape around the face a little longer but still featuring those sliced layers.” It works beautifully on straight, wavy or curly textures – “a little movement can be great as it creates natural texture and movement,” says Syd, the key is to keep things choppy.
