Squid Game is the stand-out winner at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2022, otherwise known as SAG Awards. As much as we are drooling over the bold coloured gowns and the lewks served by some of our favourites celebs, let’s jump straight into the biggest story of the night. The winners!
The first award announcement was given to the history-making, record-breaking Netflix original series Squid Game. The epic series smashed Netflix records as the most-watched original series on the platform beating Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton, with 1.65 billion hours of viewing in 28 days following its September 17th premiere across the globe. That’s equivalent to more than 182,000 years in total! Well, it looks like Squid Game has made history yet again by being the first non-English-language TV series and the first Korean series to win at the SAG Awards, being awarded as best Stunt Ensemble in a TV Series.
Squid Game went ahead to gain almost a clean sweep with three out of four nominations leading to a win, which also included Best Male Actor in a Drama Series, and Best Female Actor in a Drama series, only missing out on the Best Ensemble in a Drama Series Award, won the cast of Succession.
Under the assumption you hadn’t lived under a rock for the last quarter of 2021, then you would remember how this TV show became one of social media’s biggest fixation. This collective obsession had Twitter and TV critics on a chokehold, and the gory and mind-blowing storyline took us all on an anxiety-fueled journey.
Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, this nine-part dystopian thriller was predicted to be a big winner at the SAGs due to the high-quality stunting, acting, score, and storytelling on the deathly survival game that targets the most desperate and debt-riddled people in the city of Seoul. For those who don’t know, the storyline follows 450 people — all of whom are drowning in serious debt — who are invited to play a cryptic game that includes a bunch of challenges based on an old Korean children’s game, luring them to risk everything for a life-changing cash prize of ₩45.6 billion (£28m). However, things quickly take turn when the participants realise that they’ve put their lives on the line, with a loss resulting in immediate death.
This was predicted to be a big night for the cast of Squi Game and big it was indeed. Yes to more diversity!
