Mushroom Blonde Is The Hair Colour In Between Blonde And Brunette That’s So Right For Summer

From biscuit brunette to candy floss pink, the food-inspired hair colour references just keep on coming. Mushroom hair first came to our attention last winter when, according to Pinterest, it was quickly outpacing other popular hair shades like cold brew and toasted coconut, with searches on the site for it up by 15% in just one month. Now mushroom blonde hair has clocked up a staggering 2.3 billion views and counting on TikTok, firmly establishing it as a must-have hue for summer.

While it might sound a little dreary (mushrooms may be delicious, but they aren’t exactly the most vibrant of vegetables), the final result is anything but. Pared-back ashy tones have been having a moment for a while now in celebrity circles and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

“We’ve noticed that those looking to switch up their hair colour are turning to their celebrity favourites for ultimate inspiration,” says Tom Spratt, Head of Beauty and Grooming at Pinterest.

The biggest hair colours for summer (including J-Lo’s new golden bronze)

“From the Kardashians who are seeing if blondes really do have more fun, to Hailey Bieber who has gone to the dark side – as the seasons change, the nation’s hair shades are set to change too. In particular, searches for ‘mushroom hair colour’ have grown – a tone which we expect will continue to increase in popularity over the coming months.”

Mushroom shades mirror the multi-tone, ashy look of mushrooms and isn’t really blonde in the traditional sense. On the hair colour spectrum, ashy blonde tones fall on the cooler side, with hints of grey, beige and even lilac. Put simply, mushroom is an in-between colour – not quite blonde, not quite brunette, making it the perfect transitional shade for anyone undecided.
