And while the actor has millions and millions of fans worldwide, some have only just realised that she puts on an accent to play her character Eleven – and that she is, of course, British IRL.
It appears to have been her recent ‘Hot Ones’ interview on YouTube channel First We Feast that has sparked the latest reactions.
“I dunno how I never knew Millie Bobby Brown has a British accent before I watched Hot Ones,” one viewer tweeted, with another responding: “MILLIE BOBBY BROWN IS BRITISH????”
But another relatably wrote: “How do people not know that Millie Bobby Brown is British? I can tell just by her name alone.”
So if you’re shocked by the news, here’s a recap. Millie Bobby Brown is most definitely British – she was actually born in Marbella, Spain, but moved back to the UK with her parents and siblings when she was four years-old. She lived in Bournemouth for another four years until the family moved to Florida, and then Los Angeles so she could start her acting career. Phew.
You may notice that she occasionally has an American twang to her accent, since she’s spent many years living in the US, too. She even told Radio Times that her accent had got even more confused after working on Stranger Things.
Discussing her role in Enola Holmes, she said: “For the last five years I’ve been playing an American character in Stranger Things and I found it really challenging being British in this, even though I am a Brit.
“I had to learn how to speak again because I’m so used to speaking in an American accent.”
But Millie is most certainly proud to be British, and spends a lot of her time in London – as well as speaking often of her love of Liverpool football club, and Oasis! She also told Heart Radio that she loves working in the UK and being able to enjoy her home comforts.
“On set I used to have a good cup of tea with digestives, almost every morning and I had a Lucozade when I needed some energy,” she said of filming in England.
“I think just for me, I loved hearing the accent all day long, the banter, don’t get me wrong I love working in America, but you know obviously home is home for me and I loved working with my people.”
