With designers and celebrities coming together from around the world at The Metropolitan Museum of Art to show off their most innovative designs, each year’s Met Gala is a once-in-a-lifetime, must-see event.
Between all the looks and all the memes, you won’t want to miss a thing, so we’ve got you covered. Before May comes around, here’s everything you need to know about the Met Gala 2023:
What is the Met Gala?
Held annually, the Met Gala is a charity benefit held by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour to fundraise for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Celebrities and designers come together to create unforgettable looks in the name of the Met Gala’s theme. The event also marks the beginning of the MET’s spring display.
When is the Met Gala 2023?
If you are a fashion enthusiast, you might already be familiar with the phrase, but the Met Gala is traditionally held on the first Monday in May. (The only exception was the rescheduled 2021 ball due to COVID-19). Honouring tradition, Vogue reports that the Met Gala 2023 will be held on May 1, 2023. Subsequently, the related display will be open to the public from May 5 to July 16.
What is the Met Gala 2023 theme?
Like previous years such as 2017’s Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between and 2011’s Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty themes, the Met Gala 2023 theme honours designer Karl Lagerfeld. Known for his role as creative director of Chanel, in addition to his work at Chloé and his eponymous brand, Lagerfeld was one of the most influential figures in fashion. So, we certainly have high expectations for this year’s looks.
Vogue unveiled the 2023 Met Gala theme on September 30, 2022, with a special announcement by Pharrell Williams, one of Chanel’s most well-known ambassadors and collaborators, which you can watch below:
