Kelly Rowland cut her hair into a curly bixie and I’m speechless

Kelly Rowland has said goodbye to her long layers and is now sporting a bixie cut, a short hairstyle that marries the classic bob with a pixie cut. The Destiny’s Child singer shared two photos and a video of her new haircut on February 14th via Instagram.

Several beauty lovers, including celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkin and Queer Eye’s Tan France liked the photo to share how much they’re loving the singer’s new cut. Rowland is yet another celebrity who’s gotten the bixie treatment: Rowan Blanchard seems to have put the cut on everyone’s hair radar when she showed it off at Paris Fashion Week in 2019, and actor Sarah Hyland arrived at the E! People’s Choice Awards in December 2021 wearing a variation of the short style. Basically, it’s the chop of the moment.

So, what even is a bixie? “It’s equal parts pixie cut and bob. It’s a shaggy bob with a mix of layers to add dimension and texture,” hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons previously told Allure. The creative cut definitely has nostalgia on its side: its popularity boomed in the ’90s, and several A-listers including Winona Ryder, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Drew Barrymore, and Cameron Diaz wore the look throughout the decade.

Though it’s definitely trending on everyone’s feeds, the bixie might not be for everyone. According to the pros, the bixie works best with certain hair types. Fabrice Gili, a stylist at Fekkai SoHo  in New York City, previously told Allure that those with thick or coarse hair might not be ideal candidates, while those with “fine to medium-textured hair” would fare well with this throwback look.

We love to see Kelly Rowland mixing things up a bit with her chic new cut, especially after sporting long hair for so… well, long.
