Turns out, she finds it best to laugh, and be incredibly humble, about the whole thing.
“It’s just funny,” she said in a recent interview with Total Film. “And I think Margot has had the grace and humour to be able to play on that, and allow me to be in the same film as her – bless her.
“It’s just a joke in real life. I’m like, ‘We don’t look anything like each other.’ I don’t mind it. It’s Margot Robbie. Are you kidding me? She’s the best. I look up to her so much. I don’t mind the comparisons. But it would be nice to move past that.”
Barbie has been the talk of Hollywood for months, especially since those pictures of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling playing a truly iconic Barbie and Ken hit the Internet. Mackey – who is also set to play a Barbie, according to reports – called the film’s tone “very unexpected in many ways”.
“I think people are going to have an idea of the film, and I don’t think it’s going to be that,” she added. “It’s going to be a surprise. I’m really excited.”
Mackey also opened up about how nice it was to act in a lighter project than her usual titles. “It’s a comedy, thank God,” she said. “No crying in this film! Let me tell you that. No crying! It was great to do pure comedy – an American comedy, as well. And I got to work with some heroes.”
She sure did. Above all, though, her dream was to work with Barbie director Greta Gerwig – and with incredible titles like Little Women and Lady Bird in the repertoire, who can blame Mackey for wanting to get involved?
“My dream was to work with Greta,” she said. “When [Barbie] came along, I was like, ‘I need to audition for this.’ I was really excited because Greta’s my hero, and I adore her. Working with her has been everything I could have dreamed of.”
Barbie is due for release in cinemas on July 21 2023.
