Charlize Theron says she was scared and didn’t feel safe with Tom Hardy filming Mad Max Fury Road

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy have opened up about their fierce arguments during the filming of Mad Max: Fury Road – a tension which, apparently, led Theron “scared s***less” and ultimately insisting on having a producer accompany her on set at all times.

The A-listers starred together in the 2015 post-apocalyptic action film, which received ten Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and won six of the Academy Awards. It was also, according to popular critical reception, one of the best films of the year.

But the price was apparently high for its leading actors. Charlize and Tom’s poisonous clashes behind the scenes were punctuated by expletive language, physical aggression and sabotaging behaviour, as an excerpt from Kyle Buchanan’s new book, Blood, Sweat, and Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, circulated in Vanity Fair, tells.

Mark Goellnicht, a camera operator, describes a particularly terse interaction, where Tom arrived three hours late on set leaving Charlize – who was at the time a new mother balancing work with looking after her newborn – waiting. She called him a “f**king c*nt” and “disrespectful”, suggesting he should be fined thousands for every minute she kept the cast and crew waiting.

“He charged up to her up and went, ‘What did you say to me?’ He was quite aggressive,” Mark told.

It was after this episode that Charlize requested a producer accompany her at all times on set.

“I was in survival mode; I was really scared sh*tless,” she said, adding “I didn’t feel safe”.

Rumours of Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron’s very public disagreements began to circulate shortly after the film’s release.

“Maybe the movie is what it is because we struggled so much with each other, and those characters had to struggle so much with each other,” Charlize told Wall Street Journal in an interview at the time.
