10 best sustainable, eco-friendly beauty brands and products worth considering in 2022

With the beauty industry being one of the biggest contributors to climate change, it’s time we seriously took a look at sustainable and eco-friendly beauty product and brand alternatives.

Skincare is the most profitable industry with an annual revenue of £2.8 billion, meanwhile the global beauty industry is estimated to be worth a staggering $603 billion (£446 billion).

So it’s no surprise that with all the packaging that comes with all the purchases we make, that our beauty and skincare regimes are massively contributing to climate change.

Thankfully, there are lots of beauty and skincare brands that are now using eco-friendly and sustainable products and packaging – all that’s needed is for us to make that change.

But in order for us to make that all important change, we need to understand exactly what eco-friendly and sustainable is, and also what to look out for when we’re buying.

What does eco-friendly and sustainable mean?

Sustainable: Able to be maintained – Many brands now use packaging alternatives that can be reused, meaning there’s less reason to throw it away as often.

Eco-friendly: Earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment – eg. products that end up in the ocean, such as plastic, which unbeknown to us can be found in many household products like face wipes. Also products that contain hazardous chemicals like sprays and detergents.

Do eco-friendly products contain chemicals?

Eco-friendly products still contain chemicals but are less likely to include products that are harmful to the environment.

What ingredients to avoid when buying beauty products?

If you’ve decided to make that change, there are some ingredients that eco-friendly brands will not include in their products, such as:

Parabens: Preservatives that prolong a product’s shelf-life. They’re also known to disrupt hormone function, activating the hormone oestrogen, high levels of which have been found in breast cancer tumours.

Products that contain Parabens include: Shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, face moisturisers, body lotions, foundations, mascaras and toner.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS): SLS provides products with lots of bubbles and helps make things squeaky clean. But long term use can dry the skin out, irritate the eyes, inflame eczema, psoriasis and other skin complaints, and leave skin feeling ‘stripped’ of moisture.

Products containing SLS: Liquid soap, shampoos, laundry detergents, dish detergents., toothpaste, bath bombs.

Phthalates: Phthalates help products to retain colour and scent, and are frequently used in cosmetics and to soften polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. It is also used as solvents in cosmetics and other consumer products.

Products containing Phthalates: Plastic bottles, cosmetics, nail polish, shampoo, hair gel, shower gel and more.

Formaldehyde: Helps keep products fresh and free from contaminants. Also referred to as DMDM hydantoin in beauty products. At low levels, breathing in formaldehyde can cause eye, nose and throat irritation. At higher levels, formaldehyde exposure can cause skin rashes, shortness of breath, wheezing and changes in lung function.

Products containing Formaldehyde: Nail varnish, nail varnish remover, hair straightening products, shampoo and conditioner, liquid soap, moisturiser, toothpaste and more.

What to look out for on packaging?

Biodegradable: Capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms and thereby avoiding pollution.

Reuse: Designed to be durable and used multiple times.

Recycle: Packaging made of materials that can be used again. Recyclable materials include glass, metal, card, paper and certain plastics.
